Planning and Development

The Planning and Development Department has rapidly moved forward in the last five years. Long gone are the days that a 20 year old wall map would depict the various zones of the city by the use of colored pencils. The department now has available an ever expanding GIS System based on up to date, high quality, color aerial photography and a digitized mapping system. With the adoption of computerized inspection forms the building inspectors will no longer carry folders full of permits. Inspection forms and a copy of the permit will be loaded on the inspector's laptop in the morning and will update the department's files when they are uploaded in the evening.

With three related sections within the department, we are continuously striving to blend and streamline services. These services include all zoning, building and code enforcement functions. The zoning section serves as the administrative staff of the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustments and the Code Enforcement Board. Their responsibilities include land use planning, development plan reviews and subdivision plat reviews. The building section is responsible for commercial and residential construction, storm water inspections and commercial property maintenance inspections. The code enforcement section enforces all city ordinances, residential property maintenance and sign inspections.

Streamlining services played only a small part in the image change of the department. The "hard to work with" reputation of the past, either real or perceived, has been the department's biggest stumbling blocks. Through good customer service this perception is now a thing of the past.
